Identification: 

 

 

• Brazilian peppers are shrubs or trees with multiple trunks that can grow up to 40 feet tall

(but usually only reach 15-20 feet).

• Leaf structure is compound (several leaflets on each stem) and alternate, and each

stem has an odd number of leaflets (usually 7-13)

• Leaves are 1-2 inches long, bright green and glossy, serrated when young and smooth

when mature, and have a reddish midrib. When crushed, the leaves have a turpentine

smell.

• Flowers are small and white. Peak flowering time is in the fall.

• Female trees produce clusters of berries that are glossy and green at first, and red

when ripe.

• Berries become ripe in late fall or winter and can stay on the trees for up to 8 months
